Thursday, 9:15pm. The Car Park Sessions. Kunle arrives from a family meeting. He looks like a man who has been lectured by six uncles. Because he has.
Kunle sat down heavily. "Three children," he said. "Tomi, Kunmi and baby Dayo. We are done. Funmi has been on the pill, then the injection, then the implant, for fifteen years. She has had side effects the whole time. I told the family I am thinking about a vasectomy."
"And?" asked Jide.
"Uncle Femi said I would 'lose my manhood.' Uncle Dayo said my voice would change. Uncle Tunde said, and I quote, 'You will become a woman, and Funmi will leave you.' My mother cried. My father left the room." He put his head in his hands. "Now I am scared. What if they are right?"
Dr Okafor, who happened to be at the car park that night eating Femi's jollof, put down his plate and laughed so hard he coughed.
"Kunle," he said. "None of that is true. None of it. Let me explain."
