From chapter 1, "The Yellow Cake". Every guide is written like a story, with real research behind it.
Sunday, 4:00pm. Amara's living room. Emeka, Jide and Tolu are summoned. A cake box on the table.
Amara had called everyone over "for cake," which was not unusual. What was unusual was that she was shaking. She placed the box on the table and stepped back.
Jide opened it. Inside was a small round cake with yellow icing and one word piped in white: SURPRISE. Next to it, balanced on a sugar flower, was a tiny pair of knitted baby socks.
There was a silence of approximately three seconds.
Then Jide screamed. Tolu screamed. Emeka, who already knew, cried. Amara cried. The neighbour banged on the wall. Jide screamed again.
Later that evening, when everyone had gone home, Emeka sat on the edge of the bed looking worried.
"Can I ask something stupid?"
"Always."
"Can we still... you know. Is it safe? I do not want to hurt the baby."
Amara laughed, then realised she did not actually know the answer. "Let us find out."
