From chapter 1, "Eight Years of "It Is Just Period Pain"". Every guide is written like a story, with real research behind it.
Sunday, 3:00pm. Ronke's flat. Hot water bottles on every chair. Tea. A long story.
Ronke, Jide's cousin, the biology teacher with the round glasses, sat curled on her sofa with a hot water bottle pressed against her lower belly. It was day two of her period. She called day two "the war."
"I was fourteen when it started," she told Amara. "Periods so painful I fainted at school. Doctors said it was normal. My aunties said I was being dramatic. At university I missed exams. At 22, sex started hurting. Deep inside, like something pulling. Doctors said I was anxious. I was diagnosed at 26. Eight years. Eight years of being told it was in my head."
Amara was quiet for a long time. "How are you now?"
"Better. Treated. Not cured. There is no cure yet. But managing." Ronke smiled. "And I have a new boyfriend. Femi. He is patient. But sex is still complicated. That is why I wanted to talk to you."
