From chapter 1, "The Change Nobody Explained". Every guide is written like a story, with real research behind it.
Wednesday, 3:12am. Amara's phone lights up. Then again. Then again.
The replies came in a rush of capital letters, the way Ngozi always typed when she was upset. I AM ON FIRE. NOT ROMANTIC FIRE. ACTUAL FIRE. MY SHEETS ARE WET. YOUR FATHER IS SNORING LIKE A GENERATOR.
Amara laughed into her pillow, then felt guilty, then laughed again. Her mother was 51, a retired headteacher who still corrected strangers' grammar in restaurants. She had never once discussed her body with her daughter. Not periods, not sex, nothing. The birds and the bees talk in their house had been one sentence: "Do not bring shame to this family."
There was a long pause. Three dots appeared and disappeared four times. Then: Okay. But bring cake.
The next afternoon. Ngozi's kitchen. Two slices of red velvet. One ceiling fan on maximum.
Jide had come along because Amara said he was "good with aunties," which was true. Aunties loved him. He was polite, he complimented their cooking, and he always took a second plate.
Ngozi fanned herself with a church programme and, to everyone's surprise, burst out laughing.
"My children. Sit. If we are going to talk about this, we talk properly. Nobody told me anything. My mother told me nothing. I will not do the same to you."
