Thursday, 9:10pm. The Car Park Sessions. Wale arrives in a suit he clearly bought for a wedding in 2011.
Wale was forty-six, a civil servant, tall, with grey at his temples and the look of a man who had not slept well for a year. His divorce had been finalised six months ago. His two teenage children lived with him every other week.
"Eighteen years," he said. "Eighteen years married. The last time I asked a woman out, I called her house phone and her father answered. Now my colleague says I need 'an app.' I downloaded it. It asked me to 'swipe.' I closed it and sat in the dark."
The car park was quiet. Several men had been through divorce. They nodded.
"I do not even know if I am ready," Wale said. "Some days I feel fine. Some days I miss my old life so much it hurts. And the thought of being... intimate with someone new terrifies me."
