From chapter 1, "Nine Days". Every guide is written like a story, with real research behind it.
Thursday, 9:05pm. The Car Park Sessions. Emeka, the engineer, is a guest speaker. He has notes. Of course he has notes.
Emeka stood in front of the whiteboard holding index cards. He was Amara's husband, a structural engineer, a calm man who liked things measured and tested. He cleared his throat.
"I have been asked to talk about talking," he said. "Which is ironic, because I am terrible at it."
The car park laughed kindly.
"When Amara and I were first married, I wanted to tell her something I liked. Something small. That I liked it when she kissed my neck. It took me nine days to say it. Nine days. I rehearsed it in the car. I nearly said it at dinner four times. When I finally said it, she said, 'Oh! Okay!' and did it. That was it. Nine days of fear for a two-second conversation."
The car park was silent. Then Kayode the sound engineer said, "Nine days is fast. I have been rehearsing something for two years."
