Read the opening

From chapter 1, "The Remote in the Fridge". Every guide is written like a story, with real research behind it.

Thursday, 9:30pm. The Car Park Sessions. Emeka arrives late, with baby food on his shirt and a nappy in his jacket pocket.

Emeka, who used to arrive five minutes early with a laminated agenda, arrived twenty minutes late. There was pureed carrot on his collar. When he reached into his pocket for his phone, he pulled out a clean nappy instead.

"Adaeze is eight months old," he said, collapsing into Uncle Bayo's spare camping chair. "I love her more than anything. But last week I put the TV remote in the fridge and the milk in the drawer. And Amara and I..." he lowered his voice, "we are more like two soldiers on night shift than a couple."

The fathers in the car park nodded slowly, deeply. Bolu raised his coffee in solidarity.

"When does it come back?" Emeka asked. "The closeness. The... everything."

Uncle Bayo patted his shoulder. "It comes back, my son. But you have to walk towards it."

JideEmeka arrived with carrot on his collar and a nappy in his pocket.
AmaraYes. That was the carrot I threw at him at dinner. By accident. Adaeze threw it first.
JideHe says you are "two soldiers on night shift."
AmaraThat is a very Emeka way of saying it. But true.
JideDoes it get better?
AmaraIt is getting better. Slowly. Tell the dads the truth.
